Dr. Rachel Herbert Thorne is a consultant in infectious diseases and microbiology, boasting dual certifications in infectious diseases and medical microbiology. With 18 years of extensive clinical experience, Dr. Thorne excels in clinical practice, education, research, and leadership, with a particular focus on bone and joint infections, antimicrobial stewardship, and the management of complex infections, including HIV.
Prior to joining SSMC, Dr. Thorne led the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at Burjeel Medical City in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Her prior experience includes serving as a consultant in infectious diseases and medical microbiology in London, UK, where she also held the position of clinical director for microbiology and pathology services. She earned her medical degree in the UK, specialising in internal medicine and infectious diseases. Additionally, she is a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and holds a masters in clinical microbiology.
A dedicated educator, Dr. Thorne is committed to advancing medical knowledge through mentorship and the design of CME-accredited teaching sessions on infection management and antimicrobial resistance. She is also actively involved in research and publications as part of the editorial team for the British Medical Journal.
Dr. Thorne’s clinical interests encompass a wide array of infectious diseases, including sepsis, transplant infections, HIV, complex orthopaedic infections, sexually transmitted infections, and travel health.
