Vascular surgery is the surgical specialty focused on treating problems with the blood vessels (vascular system) and lymphatic system. Vascular disease refers to conditions that affect the arteries, blood vessels, veins, and tiny capillaries in the body. The lymphatic system consists of small vessels that transport lymph, which contains infection-fighting white blood cells into the bloodstream. Surgical treatment is an option for patients who have vascular disease that cannot be treated with less invasive, non-surgical treatments. Vascular surgery treats diseases of the arteries and veins associated with vascular disease.
