With a career dedicated to improving the quality of life for patients with serious illness, Dr. Weatherstone is known for her holistic and compassionate approach to care. She addresses not only physical symptoms, but also the emotional, social and spiritual challenges faced by patients and their families.
Dr. Weatherstone earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S.) from the University of London, followed by four years of internal medicine training, culminating in her Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (M.R.C.P. UK) in 2010. She subsequently completed two years of specialty training in Medical Oncology and four years in Palliative Medicine at internationally respected institutions including University College London Hospital (UCLH), St Bartholomew’s and the Royal Free Hospital. Her commitment to whole-person care is further reflected in additional training in psychiatry and counselling.
Alongside her clinical expertise, Dr. Weatherstone has pursued extensive academic training. She holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Oncology from the Institute of Cancer Research (UK), a Bachelor’s degree (with Honours) in Neuroscience and Anatomy, a Master’s degree in Medical Law and Ethics (Merit – Keele University), and a Master’s in Psychodynamic Theory (Distinction – University of London), for which she received the Gilchrist Trust Prize.
With over 18 years of medical experience – 12 of those dedicated to Palliative Medicine – Dr. Weatherstone has held several senior leadership roles, including that of Medical Director. She has also contributed to medical education as a Senior Clinical Lecturer at both the University of Otago and the University of Auckland in New Zealand. In recognition of her work, she was a finalist in Auckland’s Health Excellence Awards for initiatives in quality improvement and patient-reported outcomes, and was a founding member of the Clinical Ethics Advisory Group in Auckland.
