Dr. Joseph Alsousou, Ph.D., F.R.C.S., M.R.C.S., L.M.S.S.A., is a consultant in orthopaedic and trauma surgery in the department of surgery at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC), in Abu Dhabi.

A distinguished orthopaedic surgeon with over two decades of clinical and academic excellence, Dr. Joseph Alsousou is a leading expert in pelvis, acetabulum, and complex hip arthroplasty. He combines a strong foundation in surgical education with extensive hands-on expertise, having completed rigorous training and fellowships in both Oxford and Cambridge.

Dr. Alsousou began his medical journey at St George’s Hospital Medical School, University of London, before undertaking higher surgical training in Oxford and Liverpool. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Orthopaedic Surgery from the world-renowned Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology, and Musculoskeletal Sciences, at the University of Oxford. His dual fellowships – one in complex arthroplasty (Oxford) and another in pelvis and acetabular trauma surgery (Cambridge) – highlight his commitment to advanced surgical practice.

Dr. Alsousou has also held consultant roles and Honorary senior lecturer in Manchester, UK, where he led Manchester Acetabulum and Pelvic Surgery (MAPS) and served as the Clinical Research Network (CRN) NIHR surgical research lead for Greater Manchester. Dr. Alsousou’s research spans the full translational spectrum from bench to bedside, with his work contributing to major multicentre studies, including the award-winning PATH-2 trial. His contributions to orthopaedic research have earned him multiple awards from respected organisations including EFORT, BOA, BOFAS, BASEM, ARUK, and the Emirates Orthopaedic Society.

In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Alsousou is a passionate educator and course director, regularly leading trauma and orthopaedic surgery workshops to advance surgical skillsets. He currently serves as the Manchester Trauma Chairman. His surgical focus includes the management of pelvic trauma, hip and knee joint disorders, and complex reconstructions including 3D-printed custom implants. He is highly experienced in treating conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, AVN (avascular necrosis), hip dysplasia, sports injuries, primary and failed hip replacements.
