Burns Prevention and First Aid Tips

Preventing sunburns

  • Put on sunscreen before going outside and reapply every two hours
  • Avoid outdoor activities when the sun is at its hottest, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Preventing burns inside the house

Inside the kitchen

  • Keep the kitchen a child free area
  • Ensure safety gates are installed at the entrance of the kitchen
  • Never hold the child while cooking, eating or drinking hot liquids
  • Ensure milk and foods are in safe temperatures before feedings
  • Install stove locks and knob covers
  • keep lighters and matches out of children’s reach
  • Avoid wearing loose clothes while cooking
  • Tie up your hair

Inside the bathroom

  • Always set the water heater temperature at 120°F (49°C)
  • Remember to test the water or check it with your elbow before bathing your child
  • Never leave the kids alone in the bathtub
  • keep all chemical cleaning solutions out of children’s reach
  • Use safety covers for all unused electrical sockets

First aid

  • Stay calm and call for help
  • Check if the victim is breathing normally, crying or talking
  • In case your clothes catch fire STOP where you are, GET ON the ground, and ROLL over until the fire is out
  • Rinse the injured site with cool water for 10 to 20 minutes
  • Do not use ice or cold water
  • Do not apply toothpaste, any topical creams or powders
  • Do not puncture any blisters
  • Keep the affected person warm
  • Visit the nearest medical facility if needed
