Dr. Salem Alharthi, MBBChBAO, MRCS, is a distinguished Consultant General Surgeon and the Chair of the Department of Surgery at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) in Abu Dhabi. With 23 years of extensive experience in surgical practice, Dr. Alharthi is recognised for his expertise in various surgical specialties, including endocrine, gastrointestinal, and hepatobiliary surgery.
Dr. Alharthi earned his undergraduate medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1999. After completing his internship at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, he obtained memberships in both the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He further honed his surgical skills at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, where he completed his surgical residency training. In 2010, he received a fellowship from the College of Surgeons of South Africa, followed by a subspeciality certificate in surgical gastroenterology in May 2013, as well as a clinical fellowship in hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery from the University of Cape Town.
As the Chair of the Surgical Department at SSMC, Dr. Alharthi leads numerous initiatives to enhance surgical practices. He has established a destination referral centre for complex gastrointestinal and oncology surgeries, treating conditions such as bile duct injuries, soft tissue tumours, and abdominal wall hernias. Dr. Alharthi is also instrumental in introducing advanced surgical techniques, including cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC, to the UAE.
Dr. Alharthi is deeply committed to education, actively teaching medical students and training surgical residents.
