Nasal and Sinus Surgery, Septoplasty and Turbinate Reduction

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to correct deformities and deviations of the nasal septum by straightening it, which leads to improved breathing through the nose.

Turbinate reduction surgery is a procedure that improves breathing and reduces nasal discharge by reducing the size of the nasal turbinate on the lateral wall of the nose, which regulates airflow.

The team of ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialists at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) perform septoplasty and turbinate reduction to relieve airway obstruction caused by turbinate hypertrophy and septal deformities.

How is the procedure performed?

Turbinate reduction can be performed alongside septoplasty under local or general anaesthesia with endoscopic assistance, using a thin lighted tube to enhance visualisation and provide magnified views of the nasal passages.

During the procedure, the surgeon makes small incisions inside the nose and in the mucosal lining of the nasal turbinate to trim, reposition or replace cartilage or bone to straighten the septum, and removes turbinate bone to open the airway.

During this procedure, our physicians use radiofrequency energy and the latest technologies, including the “Microdebrider”, which precisely removes tissue and helps the surgeon preserve sufficient healthy tissue for turbinate function.
