Pleurisy

What Is Pleurisy?

Pleurisy is an inflammatory condition affecting the pleural membrane that lines the lungs and the chest wall. This inflammation causes sharp chest pain that worsens with deep breathing or coughing.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of pleurisy include:

  • Sharp chest pain that worsens with deep breathing or coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dry cough
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Sweating
  • Pleural friction rub (a cracking sound when breathing)

Causes

  • Viral, bacterial or fungal infection
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Cancer
  • Chest trauma

Diagnosis

Your doctor will examine you and ask about your symptoms. They may also request certain tests, such as:

  • Chest X-ray
  • Computed tomography (CT) of the chest
  • Blood tests
  • Thoracentesis (removal of fluid from the space between the lungs and the chest wall)

Treatment

Treatment depends on the underlying cause, and may include:

  • Antibiotics (to treat bacterial infection)
  • Antiviral medicines (to treat viral infection)
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen or naproxen) to relieve pain and fever
  • Corticosteroids (to manage autoimmune inflammation)
  • Chemotherapy or radiotherapy (to treat cancer)

When Should You See a Doctor?

Most cases of pleurisy are treatable. Chest pain usually improves within a few days of starting treatment, although full recovery may take several weeks.

Seek medical attention immediately if you have any symptoms of pleurisy, particularly if you experience shortness of breath or a high fever.
