What Are Polycystic Kidney Diseases?

Polycystic kidney diseases are a group of inherited conditions characterised by the development of multiple cysts on the kidneys. They are classified into two main types:

• Simple polycystic kidney disease: Usually affects adults and rarely causes serious complications
• Paediatric polycystic kidney disease: Affects children, is often more severe than the simple type and may lead to kidney failure at an early age

There is no definitive cure for polycystic kidney disease, but treatments aim to control symptoms and prevent complications. Treatments include:

• Antibiotics to treat urinary tract infection
• Surgery to remove large cysts
• Dialysis or kidney transplantation in advanced cases
