  • The Pediatric Endocrinology Division at SSMC is one of Abu Dhabi’s first facilities to introduce these types of treatments, putting the focus on patients with diabetes and their medical needs
  • The smart medical solutions are top-of-the-line insulin pumps that adhere to the patient’s skin, making them especially convenient for children and adolescents to live an active life without tangled tubes and multiple daily injections

Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC), one of the UAE’s largest hospitals for serious and complex care and a joint-venture partnership between Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) and Mayo Clinic, is one of the first facilities in Abu Dhabi to introduce several smart insulin pump systems that automatically adjust insulin delivery to patients with diabetescontinously.

Setting a new benchmark for diabetes care through these technologies, SSMC aims to help adults and children in Abu Dhabi monitor and manage their glucose levels effectively, enabling them to prevent episodes of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, and live a fuller life.

Commenting on these recent technological offerings, Dr. Asma Deeb, consultant pediatrician and chair of the Pediatric Endocrinology Division at SSMC, said: “Diabetes is a chronic disease that presents numerous challenges to patients who are trying to effectively manage their health. As an advanced complex care facility,SSMC identified the need to make these automated management systems available to patients in the UAE and provide added convenience, through user-friendly and advanced tools, that enhance their quality of life.”

Dr. Deeb added: “We’re currently seeing a significant number of referrals from other facilities so that patients can benefit from this technology. These medical solutions are also suitable for children and adolescents, and there are plans to introduce them to other categories of diabetic patients in the future. At present, we have the highest number of these solutions in the country, and we hope to be able to treat all patients with diabetes who require them.”

Dr. Matthew Gettman, chief medical officer at SSMC reflected on the importance of providing chronic disease patients with the latest global solutions and said: “SSMC’s primary value is to place patients’ needs first, by ensuring the provision of cutting-edge technological solutions to patients living with diabetes, SSMC delivers on its promise of delivering holistic and transformational care for complex and serious conditions.”

Dr. Gettman added: “Combined with our multidisciplinary team of experts, access to an integrated facility and the latest research through our Mayo Clinic partnership and our recently launched Clinical Trials Unit, SSMC aspires to continuously exceed patient expectations by providing compassionate trusted care right here in the heart of Abu Dhabi.”
